The Kowa BD II 8x42 Wide angle Binocular replaces the original BD42-8XD with updated optics and features. They have updated fully multi-coated lens coatings, including Kowa's hydrophobic KR coating on the external lens surfaces to repel water and dirt. BD II roof prisms are phase- and reflection-coated for maximum light transmission. The objective lenses feature Kowa Prominar ED (extra-low dispersion) glass that is rich with fluoride crystal. The BD II 8x42 has a huge field of view (429' at 1000 yds), a 5.9' close focus, and 17mm of eye relief.

So upfront, this is the first quality binoculars that I've owned, and I'm impressed with my purchase! I didn't know anything about binoculars other than magnification and field of view, but nothing about quality, price, optics, all the things that actually constitute quality binoculars. After an online study that left me half educated and half confused, I fortunately landed on Optics4Birding where I found a significant selection of binoculars that fit the criteria that I'd set.
Weight and size were important as my wife and I share these (for now) and while there were probably 5 other models that were really close contenders, these best met my criteria, and additionally had the look that I like, and I appreciate Kowa's reputation for quality.
I'll end with my most concise critique leaving the technical aspects to the specification sheet.
"The size, design and outer texture of these binoculars makes them a joy to use. They simply have a feel of quality to me."

For the price, the optics of this unit rival higher priced binoculars. I don't wear glasses, and when I put these up to my eye's, the field of view comes in perfect. Clear and crisp. I hike often and these are perfect to take along
