Design type refers to the design configuration of the optic. Binoculars and scopes come in both porro and roof prism designs. Each of these configurations have typical advantages over the other in price, quality of view and ease of use. A full descriptive text on how each of these design configurations perform, their advantages and function can be found in the Basics I article in the All About Optics section.
